The role of UNPROFOR peacekeepers during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina focusing on the safe area Gorazde
Poláková, Michaela ; Žíla, Ondřej (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to analyse the role of UNPROFOR (United Nations Protection Force) during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the years 1993-1995. The deployment of a peace-keeping mission was the only step taken by the Western countries towards resolving the conflict in the beginning, because none of the states were willing to intervene militarily. The humanitarian mission was supposed to be a temporary solution to the crisis, with the sole purpose of easing the suffering of the civilian population. At first, the main goal of UNPROFOR was to secure and maintain the Sarajevo airport, which was used for delivering supplies. With the conflict continuing, the UNPROFOR mandate was expanded, e.g. to protection of the humanitarian convoys. An important moment for the international community came with the introduction of the safe area concept. First one was established around Srebrenica, then other five were created - Tuzla, Bihać, Gorazde, Zepa and Sarajevo. With the help of UNPROFOR, these enclaves were supposed to safeguard the civilians and secure access to basic needs. The aim of this project is to find specific reasons behind the unsuccessful UNPROFOR mission and to determine, whether it was the fault of the soldiers themselves or of the international community. The hypothesis this thesis...
Srebrenica massacre and its diverse perception in scientific literature
Šanca, Filip ; Žíla, Ondřej (advisor) ; Otčenášek, Jaroslav (referee)
Srebrenica massacre remains unexplained in many aspects. Views of authors on it vary vastly in almost all respects. The tragedy was misused on purpose as a tool of propaganda. Not only the number of victims, but also the facts alone were altered according to one's particular interests. Comprehensive treatise on the diverse perception probably does not exist; and if, it is purposely distorted again. The aim of my work is not to undoncitionally determine which of the sides were right and which of them considerably changed the history by its uncritical interpretation. I am not going to try to examine the act itself, but the views on it. Secondary literature will thus be the main source of my work. First of all, I am going to outline the historical and political context of Srebrenica massacre. Main topic and core of my work is going to be analysed in the second part, where I am going to focus on the perception of massacre in scientific literature itself. That is in point of view of the participants themselves and of the states of International Comunity that analysed the case from afar. My aim is to examine the particular views and to compare them.
